Rugby Touch Rules

rugby position

A team usually has ten (10) players. Up to six (6) substitutes may be available for a team at any given time. If a substitute is being used, it must touch the line of play. A team must have at least six players on the field to forfeit two points. The team that has six or more players may play at the same time without penalty.

The First Pass refers to the act of bringing the ball into play following a change of possession. This can be either an forward pass or a kick on. If the forward pass is successful, the player might be able to catch it over the line and run the ball backwards with forward momentum. A knock-on, on the contrary, brings the ball into play. But, it might not lead to a touchdown.

rugby rules basics

The roll ball allows play to be restarted after each touch. This act is optional unless the ball gets knocked out of the hand. It is not permitted to roll more than a meter, however, and a player may not run the ball out of bounds. If a ball is lost or stolen from a player's hand, they must immediately move to throw it to a fellow player. Although a player has the option to run to his best supporting position, he will not be able score.

The most important aspect is the touch count. Each team may have six touches of the ball. The ball must be returned to the spot where it was touched. The ball is considered dead when a player touches the ball prior to a touchdown. The attacking team's touch count will restart.

The touch count is determined based on the position of each player in possession at the moment of the touch. A player who is onside at a defending scoreline is allowed to lean over the scoreline to touch the attacking player, but the player in possession of the ball may not do this. When passing the ball directly to another player, defending players may touch it. But, this is not considered a touch. The touch must be returned to the spot where it occurred by the player in possession, regardless of position.

The touch count may vary depending on the position. However, the referee might allow for some flexibility. A player from the sideline may touch the ball before the touchdown, but they cannot touch the ball during the ruck. This is the case if a defending player makes a forward pass or knocks on, but cannot interfere with the player in possession.
