Rugby Touch Rules

rugby league news

A team typically has ten (10) members. The team may have up to six (6) substitutes on the field at any one time. If a substitute is used, it must make contact behind the line of scrimmage. A team with less than six players must forfeit two points. The team that has six or more players may play at the same time without penalty.

The First Pass, which is the act that brings the ball into play upon a change in possession, is called a "First Pass". This can either be a forward or knock on pass. In the event of a forward pass, the player may be able to catch the ball over the try-line and then run the ball backwards with forward momentum. A knock on is a move that brings the ball into play but does not necessarily result in a touchdown.

The roll ball acts to restart play after each touch. This action is only allowed if the ball is dropped from the hand. It is not permitted to roll more than a meter, however, and a player may not run the ball out of bounds. If a player holds the ball and it is taken from him, he must immediately take action by tossing the ball to his teammate. A player can run to the best supporting position in front of his teammate, but may not score.

The most important aspect of the game is the touch count. Each team has six touch rights to the ball. In the event the ball is lost from the hands or is knocked into a ruck, each team is allowed six touches on the ball. The ball is considered dead if it is touched by a player before a touchdown. The attacking team will start the touch count again.

The position of the ball in the possession of the attacking player at the time of touch determines the touch count. A player who is onside in a defending scoreline can touch the attacking player by leaning over the scoreline, but the person in possession of the ball cannot do this. When passing the ball directly to another player, defending players may touch it. This does not count as touch. The player in possession must return to the mark where the touch occurred, regardless of his position.

The touch count for each position is different. The referee may also allow a player to have some leeway. A player on the sideline may be touched before a touchdown, but cannot touch the ball in the ruck. If a defender player passes or knocks on the ball, this is possible. However, the player in possession cannot interfere.
